Conversations with God

September 4, 2009

“My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: …when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.” -Proverbs 6:20, 22b

In this Proverb, when it is said “thy father’s commandment,” we are to take it that such commandments are given from a godly father. And with the “law of thy mother,” we are to assume that they are laws that concur with the laws of God. For Solomon had godly parents, and the laws and commands that he learned from them were none other than the words of God.

And so it is in our Christian walk, that God commands us to keep His words, and not forsake them. He continues and tells us to, “Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck” (Proverbs 6:21). Think on them, meditate on them, and make them so a part of our everyday lives that they become a part of us.

Conversations with God

When we’ve made God’s words a priority in our life, and they’ve become almost a part of our very heart and soul, they will start to surface in our times of trouble. “When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee” (Proverbs 6:22a).

But not only that, but when we pray, and seek guidance from God, He will reveal Himself to us through His word. “[W]hen thou awakest, it shall talk with thee” (Proverbs 6:22).

God can remind us of Bible verses or lessons learned with such precision and faithfulness that it will come as an immediate answer to prayer. It is as if God is actually speaking with you: not a one-way talking that most prayers of ours tend to be, but an actual two-way conversation, where God will answer us back, and show us the wisdom that we need in a given situation.

Making God a priority

Yet, all of this doesn’t just happen automatically. As the verses from Proverbs state, we are to keep God’s commands, and forsake them not. We are told to bind them continually upon our heart, and tie them around our neck. It is only when we make God and His words a priority in our life that we will reap the true benefits of talking with God. It is only when His words have become a part of our heart that He will be able to point to them as signposts and guide-ways on our path of life.

Continually we are advised and told to make God’s words a priority, then we will have the success that we desire. If we fail to heed the admonishments contained in His very word, how should we ever expect to benefit and hear the wisdom of His word in our time of need?

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” -Joshua 1:8
