Do You Talk to God as You Would Your Father?
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” -Romans 8:14-15
The verses above show that if we have been born again, then we are, in essence, sons and daughters of God. And because of this, we can come to God in prayer, and talk to Him as we would a father.
“[W]e cry, Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15b). The word “Abba” is a very interesting one, in that it is very juvenile-sounding. Some have said that it is even as the equivalent of saying da-da, or daddy. Abba: it is a very simple word that could easily be a baby’s first words, much like da-da or ma-ma.
I believe that God has chosen to use this “baby” word to help show us that we ought to come to Him without guile or pretense. We need not try and impress God with fancy words or put on a show for Him. He simply wants to have a genuine, heart-to-heart talk with us as a father would do for his young children.
For this type of child-like prayer, it would help to think on the names that we call our own earthly father, and make a few connections with God as our heavenly father. What do you call you father? Dad, daddy, pa, papa, father, etc. Everyone has a different term, depending on background, culture, ethnicity.
Instead of simply making a show and calling God our “Heavenly Father,” try to pray to God using the term that you would naturally use for Father. You may see God in a new light, and make Romans 8:15 more of a reality, being a son or daughter of God.
“And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.” -Mark 14:35-36
