Ponder the Path of Your Feet

September 2, 2009

“Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.” -Proverbs 4:25-26

Here is a common metaphor seen in the Bible: that our lives are like a path, each step perhaps is a day, and the direction we are headed is dictated by the choices we have made.

In this proverb, Solomon advises us to look straight ahead, and to ponder the path of our feet. That is to say, stop and consider where we are heading in life. Don’t just live in the moment, but stop and consider where you are going.

We all make choices, and each choice has a consequence. The very essence of wisdom is to be able to see in a spiritual mindset, as from God’s perspective, the cause and effect of our choices.

For instance, we are told in Scripture, that if we do not have mercy on those that do wrong to us, God will not show mercy to us. So if we are failing to show others mercy, then if we are wise, we ought to be able to see the cause and effect of our decisions, and recognize the cause to our difficulties in life: and adjust our path accordingly.

The most important decision

While wisdom helps in a variety of life’s situations, perhaps none is so critical a one as this: am I going to heaven when I die? That is, if your life is a path, look ahead on that path, and see if you can tell where it is leading you. Is it leading to destruction? Are you absolutely sure it is leading you to heaven?

The Bible says that the path that goes to hell is very wide, and many people walk down it. Yet the path to heaven is very narrow, and very few people find it. Yet the Bible advises you: ponder the path of your feet! Consider whether you’ve made Jesus Christ the Lord and Savior of your life. Ask yourself if the path that you are on is truly leading to heaven, or if you’ll fall short and end up on the broad path that leads downward to everlasting damnation.

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” -Matthew 7:13-14
