Salvation: Past, Present, and Future

July 16, 2009

But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us; -2 Corinthians 1:9-10

Just as Paul writes of his deliverance out of danger and snares, so too is our salvation.

Jesus Christ has delivered us from sin, His is delivering us from sin, and He will deliver us from sin.

  • Has delivered: Jesus Christ has paid the price for our sins nearly 2000 years ago, and the gift of eternal life is made available to us today. “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6).
  • Is delivering: Jesus Christ has given us the Holy Spirit to live within us, and to guide us into all truth. He convicts us of sin, and helps us to do the things that are pleasing to God, and to know His will. If we sin, Jesus Christ is still there to help us: “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:1-2).
  • Will deliver: Even though salvation can happen today, it isn’t truly and fully realized until we come face to face with the judgment of hell that we were saved from. In the last day, a very great judgment of all mankind will take place: some to eternal life, and some to everlasting destruction.

And I saw a great white throne, and him [Jesus] that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. -Revelation 20:11-15
