The Infinite God

“Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.” -Psalm 147:5

When we say that God is infinite, we mean that He is without limit or measure. In other words, He is endless.

But though the Creator is infinite, His creation is not. To put it into terms that we can easily understand, God is big, and we are very small. God stands over the whole of His creation, and looks down as if it were but a small shoebox. He is not limited by the restraints and boundaries of His creation, but is immeasurable. There is nothing in all of God’s creation that can compare with God, or equal Him, but all are tiny and finite in comparison to God’s infinity.

One created thing that we commonly think of as being endless is outer space. And yet the Bible says that the blackness of space is a finite, created thing: one that God has made as a covering for Himself, almost like a blanket.

“I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering.” -Isaiah 50:3

Not only is darkness both created and finite, but so is light:

“Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:” -Psalms 104:1-2

It is interesting that this great creation of the universe is commonly compared to a covering, or a curtain, or even as clothing, and that it is finite and created, and not infinite.

In the verse above, the Bible says that God has stretched the heavens like a curtain, and even modern science affirms this, and shows that the universe is expanding and growing. As with any aspect of God’s creation, space is not infinite and open out unto eternity, but there are expanding bounds of space.

And yet, modern science teaches that the universe simply exploded into being from nothing, called the “Big Bang”— and the Bible teaches the very same thing, only that there was an Infinite Creator behind the entire occurrence, and by God’s infinite power, He was able to “pull” the entire cosmos of creation into being in one single instance, with unfathomable power, speed, and precision.

“Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together.” -Isaiah 48:13
