The Patience of Job

July 5, 2009

What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? -Job 2:10

Here we see the incredible patience of Job. He had lost everything that he had: all his riches, his honor, his ten children, and even his own health. Yet he showed patience and received both good and bad at the hand of God. “…In all this did not Job sin with his lips” (Job 2:10).

Many times, we as Christians tend to forget God in the good blessings that He gives us. Yet perhaps just as bad, we also blame God when anything goes wrong. Often we cannot see the purpose behind life’s sorrowful events, and think that God has forsaken us.

Yet we ought to see a lesson from Job’s life. Though he couldn’t see the purposes that God had in all of his calamities, Job still trusted that God was bringing it all to pass for the best. Even though he felt perhaps somewhat distant and alienated from God, Job still held fast to his convictions and beliefs, and didn’t go astray or react rashly because of his misfortunes.

Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him: But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold. -Job 23:8-10
