You Can’t Give What You Don’t Have

July 17, 2009

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. -2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Here Paul is writing to the Corinthian church for the second time, and he mentions a principle that is worthy of reiteration. He says that God comforts him, and therefore he is able to share this same hope and comfort with others. In other words, you can’t give what you don’t have.

Jesus said:

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. -John 14:18

What did He mean by this? Jesus had something specific in mind. When He said, “I will come to you,” what He was referring to was the Holy Spirit. Jesus is now seated at the right hand of the Father, in heaven. Yet down here on earth, He comes to us in the form of the Holy Spirit, sometimes called the Comforter.

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my [Jesus'] name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. -John 14:26-27

All of this provision was given so that we might be able to share it with others as well. If we are not at peace, how can we expect to share peace with others? If we are not comforted, how can we expect to comfort others?

Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. -John 16:24
