Ignorance is Not Bliss
“Neglect a danger and it will some time take you by surprise.” -Publilius Syrus
Perhaps there is no greater danger that is neglected than that of one’s soul. About the only time a natural man considers the fate of his soul is during a funeral, for the Bible says that it is in this state of mourning that he will consider his end:
“It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.” -Ecclesiastes 7:2
Yet in most everyday affairs, we are negligent as to the estate of our souls. We do not like to think about such grave matters. Yet, when we neglect this danger, it is only the more likely to fall upon us suddenly, by surprise.
The psalmist describes the sudden fall of the wicked:
“For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. . . . When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me; Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end. Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction. How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors. As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.” -Psalm 73:3-5, 16-20
