Satisfaction of the Soul
“What do you need of money if you cannot use it?” -Publilius Syrus
Suppose you were trapped on a desert island, and were starving. Then a man approaches you, and offers you one of two choices: a loaf of bread, or a giant nugget of gold—equal in size to the loaf of bread. Which would you choose?
If we truly wanted to live, we would pick the bread: simply because it is the very substance of that which can satisfy us. But it’s true, if we had a market nearby where we could buy bread, we would gladly take the gold and use it to buy to our heart’s content, and have much leftover.
Our soul is much like the preceding hypothetical scenario. We cannot buy the things that would truly satisfy us deep down. Yet, strangely, we continue on in an absurd greediness for things that will never truly make us happy or give us peace or rest.
“Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.” -Isaiah 55:2
The Bible teaches us that our souls are redeemed with something that is of everlasting value—the blood of Christ—and not with the passing glitter and gleam of this world.
“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:” -1 Peter 1:18-19
In the Bible, Jesus is sometimes called the “bread of life,” and it was His body that was broken, and His blood that was shed, for our sins. He is the only one who can truly satisfy the emptiness of our souls.
“I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” -John 6:51
